fresh meat

Do you want to play?

As the derby fever begins to grow throughout the nation and indeed the world, so does the Red Stick league as it continuously grows with each passing year. We eagerly invite any and all women who would like to work towards becoming your own derby icon.

Scheduled fresh meat classes will occur only a few times a year so it is important that you be prepared and know what to bring. Please contact us with any questions you may have, or to find out when our next training session will occur.

  • What do I need when I show up?

Every skater will be required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, mouthguard and quad roller skates at every practice. Mouth guards are usually around $2 at any sporting good store and are way cheaper then a whole new set of teeth.

  • How can I get ready for the next fresh meat class?

Come see our games and get a taste of how fast, aggressive and awesome the game is, and to see what an undertaking it is to be a derby girl.

Then, once you are hooked, skate, skate, and skate some more! The more comfortable you are on wheels, the faster you will forget about the fact that you are on wheels and you'll be able to work on learning the game. Skate outdoors.

Derby girls are athletes first and foremost, so work on your fitness off skates as well. Increase your endurance and strengthen those leg and core muscles – you're going to need them!

Currently, our structure is set up in a three tier process.

  • First the fresh meat

This includes working as a small group of new women learning the basics of skating and getting introduced to the techniques of roller derby. This phase lasts for a minimum of 6 weeks. At the end of the six weeks there will be a minimum skills test which will include a written test of WFTDA rules and regulations, a skating skills test going over all of the exercises that we cover in the fresh meat training, and finally completing a "25 in 5". This is a timed event whereby you must complete 25 laps around a certified WFTDA track in no longer that 5 minutes. The 25 in 5 is a yearly requirement for all derby girls on the team. Everyone must pass in order to be eligible for a bout roster.

  • Next comes sub-pool

Once you have your feet under you and have passed the minimum skills tests, you will begin skating with RSRD in practice, learning all the strategies and techniques of being a competative roller derby team. This portion of the process will last for an additional 6 weeks. During this time you should be working on your own time as well as in practice to continue to develop your skating skills.

  • Finally, time for the sorting hat

Depending on your skill level at this point and the status/availability of the current teams that are existing, you will be placed on a team. All that is left is to put your game face on, step out onto that floor, and kick some roller derby butt!
